His warm breath in her ear caused her to giggle. She was pleased she had an interfering bruder and Elijah had an interfering schweschder, and she couldn’t wait to tell Olive. Even though Elijah hadn’t asked her to marry him yet, in her heart, she knew that would follow. Olive would marry Blake and she would marry Elijah. This was the happiest day of her life.
Elijah put his arm around her shoulders once more and pulled her in close to him causing her to feel warm and safe. “I don’t want you to work at that place again. I want to keep you far away from … Englischers.”
“Oh.” Jessie was delighted. It would be awkward facing Donovan again.
“Is that okay?”
“Jah, I’m happy with that. I’ll give my notice.”
“Denke. I’ll help you find work somewhere else if you’d like.”
“Okay, but I might want to take a break and help Mamm around the haus before I start looking for another job.”
As Jessie rested her head on his shoulder, her mind drifted to Olive suggesting their small group of friends find jobs as maids and nannies. If they hadn’t agreed, Olive would never have met Blake. And Jessie knew she had been meant to meet Donovan Billings because now she appreciated Elijah Hesh all the more. Now, she’d never take him for granted or wonder if there was anyone out there better suited.
Again, they heard Jessie’s father clear his throat causing Elijah to edge away from her. Elijah and Jessie looked at each other and laughed.
It was becoming a habit that each of the five friends shared their good news at the coffee shop and Jessie sat at their usual table, early for the first time in, well, forever. She was the first of the girlfriends to arrive. Of course, Olive, being Elijah’s sister already knew what she was going to announce, but the others had no idea.
One by one the girls arrived and when they all had their food and drinks in front of them, each shared her news, the good and the bad.
“And how’s your job, Claire? You were worried about it last time,” Jessie asked her.
Claire shrugged her shoulders. “I’m still there. Things are fine until the daughter-in-law visits. Nothing much has changed. The old couple and their son love me.”
Lucy turned to Olive, “And what about you and Blake?”
“We’re doing fine. I don’t see him as much as I like, but he’s doing well. Leo just loves the farm. It’s better than being in front of a TV most of the time like he was with his grandmother.” Olive then stared at Jessie giving her a nod, telling her it was time to talk.
“I have some news. Elijah and I are officially a couple.”
All three of the other girls were in shock, much like when Olive had shared her news about Blake joining the community with his young son.
“Olive’s Elijah?” Lucy asked.
“Jah. Elijah Hesh.”
“You’ll be Olive’s schweschder-in-law,” Amy squealed.
Jessie nodded. “Maybe. I think so, in time.”
“Jah, she will,” Olive said.
Lucy looked at Olive and then Jessie. “We’re all so pleased for you, Jessie. I don’t know why we didn’t think of Elijah when we were moaning about the lack of men around.”
“I think it was because he’s Olive’s bruder. We just didn’t think of him,” Claire said. “Now that you two have men, it’s our turn, isn’t it, girls?”
“That’s right,” Amy said. “You two finding men gives us hope.”
“It’s something I want more than anything.” Claire, ever the romantic, clasped her hands to her heart, looked up at the ceiling and sighed loudly, causing all the girls to laugh.
“If it’s happened for us two, it will for all of us. I just know it,” Jessie said, and all the girls agreed.
